Bin it, don’t flush it - Items that are top blockage culprits

12th August 2018

After a long hard night of work, it feels highly tempting to throw your items down into the toilet or kitchen sink, turn on the tap and hope that it washes off. While it seems the easiest way out, this is actually the leading cause of blockages and damage to drainage systems within our clients. Most homeowners have very little idea on the specifics on how these items interfere with their drainage system. With our Republic Plumbing experience, these are the leading items, which seem relatively harmless, but are truly the top causes of blockages.

Items

Diapers and sanitary items

In Singapore, commercial toilets usually have a separate bin for sanitary items - called a sanitary bin. Property managers are right to demand so, and for good reason. Diapers and Sanitary Pads, flushed down the toilet bowls, are also a leading cause of chokages, simply because of how big they are. Due to this factor, these items are also not simply removed with the use of a plunger. There is also a high possibility that the plumber may be required to remove the drainage system then install a new one. This is likely the most costly error potentially made. There will be other areas, such as sanitary bins for pads and diapers, allocated for throwing. Else, if at home, throwing these items directly into the rubbish bin does work as a solution as well.

Paper items

We have seen instances where homeowners in Singapore have attempted to flush down worksheets, leftover paper and tissue down their sinks or bowls because it seems to be harmless. These items are not toilet paper. Toilet paper is designed to completely dissolve in water, while other paper-made products simply are not. Throw these items where they belong, in the rubbish bin.
